J test restrictions को एक समूह के रूप में जाँचता है

Generalized method of moments (GMM) सैद्धांतिक moment conditions के sample रूपों को यथासंभव शून्य के निकट लाकर parameters का अनुमान लगाता है। Instrumental-variable model में कोई moment यह कह सकता है कि सही parameter पर प्रस्तावित instrument structural error से uncorrelated है। दूसरे models में asset-pricing equations, Euler equations या panel-data restrictions से moment conditions निकलती हैं।

यदि model में unknown parameters से अधिक moment conditions हों, तो estimation के बाद कुछ अतिरिक्त restrictions जाँचने के लिए बचती हैं। किसी निर्दिष्ट weighting matrix को लागू करने के बाद fitted sample moments शून्य से कितनी दूर हैं, Hansen J statistic उसका सार देता है। उस setup के भीतर यह joint specification test है। यह सीधा audit नहीं है जो किसी एक instrument को “valid” या “invalid” का लेबल दे सके।

Finance और quantitative research में यह भेद महत्वपूर्ण है। Trading या asset-pricing model कई moment conditions दे सकता है, लेकिन test का नतीजा इस बात पर निर्भर करता है कि उन moments को कौन-से returns, factors, instruments, dates और covariance assumptions परिभाषित करते हैं। छोटा p-value assumptions के उस समूह के विरुद्ध evidence हो सकता है; बड़ा p-value इस बात का स्वतंत्र प्रमाण नहीं कि सभी assumptions सही हैं।

Sample moments एक weighted GMM distance बनाते हैं

मान लें कि \(g_t(\theta)\), तारीख \(t\) पर parameter vector \(\theta\) के लिए मूल्यांकित, \(q\) घटकों वाला moment-contribution vector है। इसका sample average है:

जहाँ \(W_T\) एक positive weighting matrix है। Weighting तय करता है कि moment conditions के बीच असहमति criterion में कितना योगदान देगी। बताए गए sampling assumptions के अंतर्गत efficient GMM ऐसा weight उपयोग करता है जो moments की long-run covariance matrix के inverse से संबंधित होता है। J test minimized criterion का उपयोग करता है, बिना estimation के चुने गए parameter पर objective value का नहीं।

सूत्र छोटा है, लेकिन इसके घटक एक-दूसरे के स्थान पर उपयोग नहीं किए जा सकते। Instruments बदलने से \(g_t\) बदलता है; sample बदलने से average बदलता है; covariance estimator बदलने से weight बदलता है; और estimator बदलने से fitted parameters भी बदल सकते हैं। इसलिए J statistic को reproduce करने के लिए केवल एक संख्या और “robust” शब्द पर्याप्त नहीं हैं।

Degrees of freedom estimation के बाद बची restrictions गिनते हैं

यदि \(q\) independent moment conditions और \(k\) locally identified parameters हों, तो overidentification के पारंपरिक degrees of freedom \(q-k\) होते हैं। उदाहरण के लिए, दो parameters का अनुमान लगाने में तीन independent moments इस्तेमाल करने पर एक overidentifying restriction बचती है। सभी population moments सही होने की null hypothesis के अंतर्गत, सही ढंग से weighted J statistic की तुलना asymptotically उतने degrees of freedom वाले chi-square distribution से की जाती है।

Moments और parameters की संख्या बराबर होने पर model exactly identified होता है और fitted moments को सामान्यतः शून्य तक लाया जा सकता है। J statistic के जाँचने के लिए कोई अतिरिक्त restriction नहीं बचती; इसलिए उसके degrees of freedom शून्य होते हैं और overidentification check उपलब्ध नहीं होता। Independent moments से अधिक parameters होना एक अलग identification problem है; इससे negative degrees of freedom या अर्थपूर्ण J test नहीं बनता।

केवल software output में columns की संख्या नहीं, बल्कि प्रभावी independent moment restrictions गिनें। दोहराए गए instruments या linearly dependent moments effective rank घटा सकते हैं। पारंपरिक chi-square reference के लिए identification और बड़े sample की अन्य conditions भी आवश्यक हैं। \(q-k\) का nominal मान singular या खराब तरीके से estimated moment covariance matrix को ठीक नहीं कर सकता।

एक काल्पनिक J value दिखाती है कि p-value किससे तुलना करती है

मान लें कि model दो parameters का अनुमान लगाने के लिए तीन moment conditions का उपयोग करता है, इसलिए पारंपरिक degrees of freedom \(3-2=1\) हैं। मान लें software बताई गई covariance assumptions के अनुरूप मानी गई weighting procedure से J statistic \(5.4\) रिपोर्ट करता है। एक degree of freedom वाले पारंपरिक chi-square reference पर p-value लगभग \(0.020\) होगी। पहले से तय 5% स्तर पर researcher इस संयुक्त null को reject करेगा कि तीनों population moments शून्य हैं।

यह निष्कर्ष “instrument 2 invalid है” से कहीं सीमित है। J statistic पूरे system की एक weighted distance है और यह नहीं बताती कि कौन-सा moment टकराव पैदा कर रहा है। यही नतीजा invalid instrument, गलत निर्दिष्ट structural equation, छूटी हुई dynamic feature, गलत covariance model या maintained setup की किसी अन्य विफलता से आ सकता है। कारण की जाँच के लिए आगे diagnostic और विषय-संबंधी विशेषज्ञ निर्णय चाहिए।

यदि p-value \(0.20\) हो, तो सही निष्कर्ष होगा कि चुने गए स्तर पर test ने joint restrictions को reject नहीं किया। इसका अर्थ “instruments की validity सिद्ध हो गई” नहीं है। Restrictions उचित होने, test की power सीमित होने, या sample इतना छोटा अथवा noisy होने के कारण भी उल्लंघन अलग न दिखे और rejection न हो। Model variants का समूह देखने से पहले cutoff तय करें; स्वीकार्य दिखने वाली p-value मिलने तक खोज करना एक और selection problem पैदा करता है।

कई नमूना मोमेंट शर्तें पैरामीटर-फिटिंग से गुजरती हैं, फिर भी सहप्रसरण-आकार वाले क्षेत्र में एक अवशिष्ट वेक्टर बचता है।
फिटिंग के बाद भारित अवशिष्ट मोमेंट दूरी का वैचारिक चित्र; इसमें वास्तविक अनुमान नहीं हैं और यह किसी खास अमान्य उपकरण की पहचान नहीं करता।

Rejection पूरी maintained व्यवस्था को चुनौती देता है, किसी एक नामित धारणा को नहीं

Null population restrictions का एक समूह है, जिसे उस model और asymptotic conditions के तहत समझा जाता है जो statistic के reference distribution को उचित ठहराते हैं। J reject होने पर उपयोग की गई weighting के तहत उस maintained system का कम-से-कम एक हिस्सा sample से मेल बिठाना कठिन है। केवल test यह नहीं बता सकता कि वजह गलत exclusion restriction, गलत functional form, छोड़ी गई state dependence, data construction error या अनुपयुक्त long-run covariance estimate है।

यह test causality भी स्थापित नहीं करता। IV design में overidentification test यह आँक सकता है कि model के अंतर्गत अतिरिक्त restrictions आपस में संयुक्त रूप से संगत हैं या नहीं। यह हर instrument के exclusion restriction को स्थापित नहीं कर सकता, खासकर जब सभी instruments में एक ही violation हो सकता है। Instrument relevance और exclusion के अर्थ अलग हैं: relevance के लिए first-stage और weak-identification diagnostics उपयोग करें; exclusion के समर्थन में आर्थिक pathway समझाएँ।

Sargan और Hansen versions अलग covariance assumptions पर निर्भर हैं

Classical Sargan test instrumental-variable estimation में restrictive covariance assumptions के तहत आया था, आम तौर पर homoskedastic disturbances मानकर। Hansen J test, estimated moment covariance से बना GMM overidentification statistic है, जो heteroskedasticity और उपयुक्त long-run covariance estimate के साथ समय पर निर्भरता को भी ध्यान में रख सकता है। “Hansen” नाम होने से implementation हर प्रकार की misspecification के प्रति robust नहीं हो जाता; covariance और weighting choices को moment process से मेल खाना चाहिए।

Time-series moments के लिए serial dependence उनके sample average का long-run variance बदल देती है। यदि assumptions और lag choice data के अनुकूल हों, तो Newey–West जैसा HAC estimate उचित covariance calculation का हिस्सा बन सकता है। Panel या clustered observations के लिए अलग covariance construction की जरूरत हो सकती है। केवल coefficient standard errors के लिए covariance correction उपयोग करने का मतलब यह नहीं कि J objective भी compatible weighting matrix के साथ बनाया गया था।

One-step, two-step और iterated GMM अलग weights से parameters estimate कर सकते हैं। Efficient two-step procedures में estimated weight finite samples में स्वयं अतिरिक्त uncertainty लाता है; observations की तुलना में moments अधिक होने पर standard errors और test behavior नाज़ुक हो सकते हैं। Windmeijer के finite-sample corrections विशिष्ट linear efficient two-step GMM settings में variance estimation के लिए हैं। वे हर J statistic का universal adjustment नहीं हैं।

Weak identification और बहुत अधिक instruments झूठा भरोसा दे सकते हैं

J test instrument strength नहीं जाँचता। कम जानकारी देने वाले instruments parameter estimates और पारंपरिक approximations को अविश्वसनीय बना सकते हैं; इसलिए आश्वस्त करने वाली J p-value को strength diagnostic मानने के बजाय weak identification के लिए बनाई गई विधियाँ उपयोग करें। Large-sample chi-square calibration यह वादा नहीं करती कि छोटा financial sample अपने asymptotic limit जैसा व्यवहार करेगा।

अधिक जानकारी मिलने का आभास होने से instruments या moment conditions जोड़ना आकर्षक लग सकता है। लेकिन dynamic panel GMM में instrument proliferation endogenous variables को overfit कर सकती है और specification tests की violation पकड़ने की क्षमता घटा सकती है। इसलिए बहुत बड़ा instrument set बनाने के बाद बहुत ऊँची p-value कम भरोसा दे सकती है। संख्या बताएँ, instrument lag या construction window समझाएँ, और जहाँ उचित हो वहाँ तर्कसंगत रूप से घटाए गए या collapsed instrument sets की तुलना करें।

छोटे samples, लगभग collinear moments, कमजोर covariance estimates, parameter boundaries और weak identification textbook interpretations को कमजोर कर सकते हैं। ऐसे मामलों में sensitivity analysis और उपयुक्त वैकल्पिक inference चाहिए, न कि यांत्रिक दावा कि J “पास” हुआ। यदि model selection में कई instruments, lag ranges, factors या sample cuts आज़माए गए हों, तो उस खोज को दर्ज करें और सबसे अनुकूल test को prespecified बताकर पेश न करें।

Difference-in-Hansen tests nested subset को शर्तों के अधीन आँकते हैं

कुछ dynamic-panel workflows moment conditions के किसी subset—जैसे अतिरिक्त instrument block—के लिए difference-in-Hansen या C test रिपोर्ट करते हैं। अवधारणात्मक रूप से nested comparison पूछता है कि क्या वह block बाकी maintained moments के साथ संगत restrictions जोड़ता है। नतीजा शेष specification पर निर्भर है; यह हर instrument के लिए स्वतंत्र validity certificate नहीं है।

दो J statistics के अंतर का reference distribution केवल संबंधित nesting, estimation और covariance conditions के पूरा होने पर होता है। तुलना किए गए models में compatible samples और moment definitions होने चाहिए; weighting और finite-sample behavior को भी ध्यान में रखना चाहिए। Full instrument set बड़ा होने पर subset test की power भी घट सकती है। कई blocks जाँचे हों तो केवल अनुकूल नतीजा चुनने के बजाय पूरी तुलना-श्रृंखला रिपोर्ट करें।

Test को इस तरह रिपोर्ट करें कि पाठक उसका अर्थ दोहरा सकें

Sample, parameter vector, moment definitions, observations की संख्या, restrictions की संख्या और effective rank, तथा degrees of freedom बताएँ। बताएं कि estimator one-step, two-step या iterated है; weighting matrix कैसे मिली; कौन-सा covariance structure स्वीकार किया गया; और कोई small-sample adjustment उपयोग हुआ या नहीं। J statistic, उसका reference distribution, p-value और analysis के लिए पहले से तय decision threshold रिपोर्ट करें।

Instruments की संख्या और construction, first-stage या relevance diagnostics, और moment set में उचित बदलावों के प्रति estimates की sensitivity दिखाएँ। समझाएँ कि instruments आर्थिक timing और exclusion argument को क्यों पूरा करते हैं; non-rejected overidentification test को उस तर्क का विकल्प न बनाएँ। Subset test उपयोग किया हो तो subset और comparison स्पष्ट परिभाषित करें। IV assumptions की पृष्ठभूमि के लिए endogeneity और instrumental variables guide, और covariance choices के लिए robust standard errors और HAC guide देखें।
