Normal distribution की tails उसके mean और variance से fixed exponential rate पर decay करती हैं। Student-t distribution degrees of freedom ν जोड़ती है और polynomially decaying tails रखती है, इसलिए extreme observations को अधिक probability देती है। यह financial returns को बेहतर fit कर सकती है, लेकिन कोई एक symmetric static distribution हर regime, skew या volatility cluster explain नहीं कर सकती
