Start futures return with net dollar P&L
Return begins with the cash result, not the margin number. For an offset trade, calculate the signed price move using the contract multiplier and quantity, then subtract commissions, exchange fees, clearing fees, and measured slippage.

A percentage only becomes meaningful after this numerator is fixed. If one report uses gross P&L and another uses net P&L after costs, their return figures are not comparable even when they use the same denominator.
Name the denominator before you write a percent
Return on notional = net P&L ÷ entry notional value. Entry notional is the entry price × contract multiplier × number of contracts, using an absolute positive denominator for either a long or short position.
Return on opening margin = net P&L ÷ the initial margin requirement used at entry. This can describe capital efficiency, but margin is collateral rather than the purchase price of the futures exposure.
Return on account equity = net P&L ÷ a clearly stated account-equity base. This answers how large the trade result was relative to the account, but the base must be time-stamped and adjusted for deposits or withdrawals.

Worked example: one trade, three valid percentages
Consider a hypothetical cash-settled index future quoted at 5,000 with a $20 multiplier. One long contract therefore has $100,000 of entry notional value.
Assume a $6,000 initial margin requirement and $12,000 of account equity assigned to the trade.
The contract is sold at 5,025. The 25-point rise creates $500 of gross P&L because 25 × $20 = $500. Assume total commissions, exchange and clearing fees, and slippage equal $20, leaving $480 of net P&L.
All three ratios use the same $480 numerator. None changes the trade's cash result. They differ because each denominator asks a different question about exposure, collateral, or account impact.
- Return on entry notional: $480 ÷ $100,000 = 0.48%
- Return on opening margin: $480 ÷ $6,000 = 8.00%
- Return on stated account equity: $480 ÷ $12,000 = 4.00%
Treat return on margin as a leverage lens, not an asset return
A high return on margin can arise because the margin denominator is small relative to notional exposure. It does not mean the futures contract itself rose by that percentage, and it does not describe maximum possible loss.
Margin can also change with volatility, concentration, contract month, clearing methodology, or broker policy. A spread offset can reduce required margin without improving the trade's underlying P&L. Record the requirement, timestamp, account rules, and any offsets before ranking trades.
For cross-product comparison, notional return often keeps the price exposure visible. For account risk, return on account equity may be more useful. Neither substitutes for a stress-loss or liquidity plan.
Handle daily settlement and cash flows without double counting
Futures are generally marked to market through daily settlement. Daily credits and debits can move cash while the position stays open, but those settlement flows are part of the same position P&L.
Do not add daily variation credits to a final trade P&L if the final number already includes the full entry-to-exit move. Reconcile the statement timeline so each price change enters the numerator once.
If money is deposited or withdrawn during the measurement period, a simple ending-equity percentage can confuse trading performance with external cash flows.

Write the calculation in this order:

If a position is rolled, calculate the old and new contract legs separately before combining the economic result.
If currencies differ, state the conversion rate and timestamp rather than mixing local-currency and settlement-currency percentages.
