The basic calculation
For a futures contract quoted at 4,800 index points with a $50 multiplier, the notional value is $240,000 (4,800 × $50). A one-point move is worth $50, and a 0.25-point minimum tick is worth $12.50. Futures tick value and contract multiplier shows how the quote converts into P&L.
Commodity and interest-rate contracts may define size in barrels, bushels, ounces, currency units, or a financial rate. Always read the exchange contract specification rather than assuming that one quoted point equals one dollar.
Notional value, margin, and leverage are different
If the contract above requires $12,000 of initial margin, the account controls roughly $240,000 of notional exposure with that collateral. Use notional value for scenario sizing
Before entering, calculate the dollar change for the planned stop, a larger gap, and several contracts. Include the multiplier, tick size, fees, spread, and any currency conversion. A stop that looks small in points can be large in dollars when the multiplier is large.
For a portfolio, add correlated contracts carefully rather than assuming notional values offset one-for-one. A hedge can leave basis, calendar, liquidity, and margin-spread risk. Check the quote and contract month
Notional value changes when the price changes, and the same product can have different multipliers across standard and micro contracts. Does a micro futures contract always have one-tenth the risk?
