Pre-earnings fallback execution checklist

Design a clear fallback ladder for size, route, and order type before the event opens

Direct answer

When earnings move, your first plan often fails; a pre-planned fallback keeps failure bounded. The question is not which trade is best, but which fallback is faster and less harmful Write the ladder before the first click, then follow it without improvisation

Write a three-step fallback ladder

Set three execution layers:

Never skip Layer 1 when Layer 2 is possible. In stress, smaller size reduces compounding risk faster than route optimization.

  • Layer 1: reduce starter size
  • Layer 2: switch route/type while preserving thesis direction
  • Layer 3: flatten non-essential exposure

Pre-define order-type transitions

Choose the exact transitions for each layer:

  1. default order type for Layer 1
  2. conditional order type for Layer 2
  3. cancel-only posture for Layer 3 if conditions remain abnormal

If a transition can still be argued, it is not transition-ready.

Link fallback timing to option clocks

Use different windows:

Do not re-enter after a failed second without a fresh state row.

  • open first minute: only Layer 1 and route checks
  • minute two to five: allow Layer 2 if quote quality confirms recovery
  • after five minutes: require full review before any re-entry

Include assignment fallback, not only entry fallback

If assignment risk appears, your fallback should specify:

For long positions, if assignment is unlikely, still define what stale quotes do to your stop and margin view.

  • whether to hedge first
  • whether to de-risk size before hedging
  • whether to wait for post-opening repricing

Keep fallback notes in one place

Use one note block with:

  • what triggered the fallback
  • current layer
  • layer transition time
  • expected end condition

Then execute that block as operationally as you execute the trade.

Audit and shorten after the event

At the next planning cycle, keep one entry:

Refine the ladder before the next event.

  • which layer was triggered most often
  • which trigger should have been caught earlier
  • which layer consumed too much time

Common questions

What if I need to re-enter immediately after fallback?

You can, but only after a fresh state check and clear condition match.

Does fallback reduce upside?

Temporary upside exposure drops, but this is usually the lowest-risk way to preserve optionality through the opening shock.

Can I have only two layers?

Yes, but the second layer must include a clean no-trade outcome to avoid false continuation.
