Do options expire on market holidays?

An option does not follow one universal holiday rule. If a scheduled expiration or last trading date is an OCC holiday, a weekly series may move to the preceding Thursday, while an index product can have its own AM or PM settlement and exercise convention. Read the contract's explicit expiration date, last trading date, settlement method, exchange calendar, and broker cutoff instead of assuming every Friday is tradable
Keep four dates and times separate
The expiration date is the contract's legal date. The last trading date is when you can normally close the series. The exercise-instruction cutoff is your broker's customer deadline, and the settlement calculation may use a different time or opening quotation. A holiday can move one clock without making the others identical.
This is especially important for index options. Some are European-style and can only be exercised at expiration; some settle from a morning opening quotation, while others use a closing value. Equity and ETF weekly options are generally physically settled and American-style, but product specifications still control the details.
Weekly series have a published holiday exception
OIC explains that weekly series normally list on Thursday and expire the following Friday. When that Friday is an OCC holiday, the weekly series expires on the Thursday before the holiday. The exchanges do not simply keep a Friday session open for that series.
That rule is for the weekly program described by OIC, not a shortcut for every option. Check the explicit numerical date in the option symbol and the current exchange or OCC product list. Settlement can move independently
An index option may stop trading on Thursday and settle from Friday's opening value, or trade through Friday and settle from a closing value, depending on the product. Cboe's SOQ documentation describes a special opening quotation for standard AM-settled index products. A holiday near that calculation can affect the business day and the data used for settlement.

Reconcile a holiday expiration in order
- Copy the explicit expiration date from the option series, not only the weekday label
- Look up the exchange and OCC holiday calendars for that year
- Confirm last trading, exercise cutoff, settlement observation, and time zone separately
- Identify physical versus cash settlement and the resulting deliverable or cash amount
- Ask the broker what happens if the series is in the money, pinned, or unclosed at the adjusted deadline

Do monthly equity options expire on a holiday?
Do not assume a universal answer from the weekday. The exchange and clearing rules set the listed series date and last trading session; verify the explicit series specification and your broker's cutoff for that contract.
Does a holiday always move expiration to Thursday?
No. The Thursday adjustment is the OIC rule for a weekly series whose following Friday is an OCC holiday. Other equity, ETF, index, and AM-settled products can use different calendars and settlement conventions.
Is the expiration date the same as the last day I can trade?
Not necessarily. A contract can stop trading before the legal expiration date, and a broker can stop accepting exercise instructions earlier still. Record each clock and its time zone.
