Follow the notice from exercise to the account14 minute read
When will I know if my option was assigned?
Learn when option assignment appears, how OCC and brokers allocate exercise notices, why timing varies for early and expiration assignment, and what positions, cash, shares, and alerts to check.
Direct answer
You know an option was assigned only when your brokerage confirms it in the account, activity ledger, position change, or assignment message. There is no market signal that guarantees beforehand which short account will be selected. OCC allocates an exercise notice to a clearing member with a short position in the same series, and that firm then applies its approved method, often random or first-in-first-out, to customer accounts. Display timing varies by broker, early versus expiration processing, weekends, and the contract.
Assignment follows a chain rather than a direct match
The holder submits an exercise instruction through a broker. OCC does not pair that holder directly with the original seller from the opening trade. It assigns the exercise notice among clearing-member short positions in the series, and the assigned firm allocates the obligation among eligible customer shorts using its disclosed procedure.
Because this occurs after the exercise decision and clearing processing, the option chain cannot show that your specific account has been selected. Probability, moneyness, dividend economics, or low time value can indicate risk, but none is an account-level notice.
Early and expiration assignment use different practical timelines
An American-style short option can be assigned on a business day before expiration. The broker may reflect the option removal and resulting shares or cash after overnight processing or on the following account cycle. Exact notification time is firm-specific.
At expiration, exercise-by-exception and contrary instructions must first be processed. A Friday expiration can therefore leave assignment uncertainty into the weekend or the next business-day display. European-style options eliminate early exercise but can still produce expiration assignment or cash settlement under their rules.
Check the whole account, not only notifications
Review the short-option quantity, transaction history, assignment or exercise activity, stock position, cash balance, buying power, and pending settlement. A short call assignment commonly requires share delivery and can create or enlarge short stock; a short put assignment commonly purchases shares at the strike.
Alerts, email, and push notifications can arrive after the ledger changes or fail because of account settings. The account record and direct broker confirmation are stronger evidence. If the resulting position is unclear, contact the firm's options or operations desk before placing an offsetting trade.
Partial assignment and closing execution need special attention
The holder chooses how many contracts to exercise, and a broker can allocate only part of a multi-contract short position. Never infer that all ten contracts or none were assigned; verify the remaining option quantity and exact share count.
OIC explains that assignment is based on end-of-day net short positions. If a buy-to-close order fully executes and removes the short before the relevant close, that position is no longer eligible for that night's assignment. A submitted, canceled, rejected, or partially filled order does not provide the same protection. Confirm execution, quantity, and posting date.
Common questions
What time will my broker notify me of option assignment?
There is no universal notification time. Brokers post assignment after receiving and allocating clearing information, and the display can vary for a normal early exercise, expiration processing, weekends, holidays, or system cycles. Ask the firm about its posting schedule, but monitor option quantity, account activity, resulting shares, cash, and buying power rather than waiting only for an email or push alert.
Can I know before the close whether my short option will be assigned?
Not with certainty. In-the-money depth, little remaining extrinsic value, an approaching ex-dividend date, and expiration can increase the economic incentive to exercise, but the holder controls the decision and OCC plus the broker determine allocation. Your account is not matched permanently with one buyer. Until the broker posts an assignment, those factors describe risk rather than confirmation.
Can only some of my short option contracts be assigned?
Yes. A holder can exercise part of a long position, OCC can allocate an exercise quantity to a clearing member, and the broker can allocate fewer than all contracts in a customer's short position. The account may therefore show a smaller remaining short option and a corresponding partial share position. Verify contract multiplier and exact assigned quantity before hedging or closing anything.
Can I be assigned after buying to close my short option?
According to OIC, assignments use net positions after the market close, so a fully executed buy-to-close that eliminates the short before that close removes eligibility for that night's assignment. Merely submitting an order does not. A partial fill leaves the unclosed quantity exposed, and a posting already related to an earlier position date requires broker reconciliation. Confirm fill time, quantity, and account activity.
