What is rho in options?

Rho estimates how much an option's theoretical value may change for a one-percentage-point change in interest rates, with other pricing inputs held constant. Long calls generally have positive rho and long puts generally have negative rho. The effect is usually more meaningful for longer-dated options, while short-dated contracts may be dominated by stock movement, time decay, and implied volatility
Read rho in percentage points
If a call has rho of 0.12, a model may estimate about a twelve-cent increase when the relevant rate rises by one percentage point, not by one percent of its current level. The estimate reverses for a comparable rate decline when the local relationship is similar
Rates affect the timing value of cash
Option models account for the cost of carrying the underlying and the present value of the strike. Higher rates generally support call values and weigh on put values under otherwise identical assumptions, though dividends and product terms also matter
Rho can be small without being irrelevant
For a near-term equity option, delta, gamma, theta, or vega may explain more of a daily price move. Rho becomes easier to notice in long-dated contracts or when the assumed rate path changes materially

Does a rate increase guarantee calls will rise?
No. Positive call rho isolates the rate input. A falling stock, lower implied volatility, time decay, or market quotes can more than offset that modeled effect
Which options have the most rho exposure?
Longer-dated options generally have more rate sensitivity because the financing and present-value effects operate over a longer period
