Separate whole-contract exercise from position sizing14 minute read
Can you exercise part of an option contract?
You cannot exercise half of one listed option contract, but you can exercise some whole contracts in a larger position. Learn the unit, costs, and risks.
Direct answer
You generally cannot exercise a fraction of one exchange-listed option contract. Exercise instructions are submitted in the contract's unit of trading or an integral multiple of it. If you own several contracts, however, you may usually exercise some whole contracts and leave the rest open—for example, exercise 3 of 10, not half of one contract.
The exercise unit is the complete contract
One standard U.S. equity option commonly covers 100 shares. Exercising one standard call buys 100 shares at the strike; exercising one standard put sells 100 shares at the strike, subject to the account's ability to complete the transaction. The holder does not choose delivery of 25 or 50 shares from that single contract.
OCC rules describe exercise in a unit of trading or an integral multiple. This is why a broker's exercise ticket asks for a whole number of contracts. Fractional-share trading elsewhere in the account does not change the option's exercise unit.
A multi-contract position can be split by whole contracts
Owning 10 identical calls creates 10 separate contract units. An instruction to exercise 3 can convert 3 contracts into the corresponding stock transaction while 7 contracts remain open. Those remaining contracts retain their own market value, expiration exposure, and exercise choices.
Confirm whether the platform lets you enter the desired quantity online or requires broker assistance. Exercise cutoffs can be earlier than exchange or OCC deadlines, and instructions may be irrevocable after the broker accepts them. Do not wait until the last minute to discover the workflow.
Adjusted contracts still exercise as their stated package
Corporate actions can change an option's deliverable from the standard 100 shares to a package of shares, cash, or other securities. Exercising one adjusted contract produces the entire stated package. A contract delivering 40 shares plus cash does not let the holder elect only 20 shares.
Read the current OCC information memo and broker contract details for the exact symbol. The exercise amount, deliverable, settlement method, and liquidity can differ from the standard contract, and the displayed contract count alone does not reveal the resulting position.
Decide between exercising, selling, or doing nothing
Exercise can require strike-price funding, sufficient shares for a put, margin capacity, and fees. It can also surrender remaining time value that might have been captured by selling the option. Compare the option's executable sale value with the economics of exercise, including spreads, taxes, dividends, and account restrictions.
If only part of a multi-contract position is exercised, calculate the stock created and the options left behind separately. Verify the final quantities after processing. If one contract would create an unaffordable or unwanted position, attempting a fractional exercise is not a solution; closing the contract or not exercising may fit better.
Common questions
Can I exercise 50 shares from one call contract?
Not from one standard 100-share listed call. Exercising that contract ordinarily creates the full 100-share purchase. You could exercise one contract from a two-contract position, but that is exercising one whole contract, not half of either contract.
Can I exercise only some of my option contracts?
Generally yes. If you own multiple identical contracts, you can usually instruct the broker to exercise a whole-number quantity and leave the others open. Check the broker's cutoff, submission method, funding requirements, and final confirmation.
What happens to contracts I do not exercise?
They remain open unless you sell them, exercise them later, or they expire. At expiration, broker and clearing procedures may result in automatic exercise for eligible in-the-money contracts, subject to contrary instructions and broker risk controls.
Can an adjusted option be partially exercised?
You may exercise some whole adjusted contracts when you hold more than one, but one adjusted contract produces its full specified deliverable. Verify that package before submitting because it may contain an unusual share count, cash, or another security.
