Direct answer

A broker may let a cash account use unsettled sale proceeds to buy an option, but permission to place the purchase does not make the funding settled. If the new option is sold before the proceeds used to pay for it have settled, the sequence can create a cash-account violation. Freeriding can occur when a security is bought and sold before it is fully paid for. Exact labels, restrictions, and available-balance calculations depend on the transaction sequence and brokerage policy, so trace the source and settlement date of every dollar.

Start with account type and balance labels

A cash account requires full payment and does not provide ordinary broker credit. A margin account can extend credit subject to option approval, margin rules, interest, house requirements, and liquidation rights; it is not simply a cash account with faster settlement.

Broker screens may show cash available to trade, settled cash, option buying power, and cash available to withdraw. The largest number is not automatically safe for every transaction. Open orders, deposits on hold, pending exercises, assignments, and other purchases can reserve part of it.

Unsettled proceeds can carry a holding condition

Suppose settled cash is zero, stock is sold Monday for 1,000, and the broker allows that unsettled amount to buy an option Monday. Under a normal T+1 schedule, the funding stock sale settles Tuesday. Holding the new option until the funding is settled is different from selling it again Monday.

FINRA warns that purchasing a security with cash from an unsettled transaction and selling the new security before those proceeds settle can create a good faith violation. Short option life or same-day profit does not remove the payment sequence.

Freeriding is more than using an unsettled label

Investor.gov describes freeriding as buying and selling a security before paying for it. It can lead to a 90-day cash-account freeze requiring purchases to be fully paid on the trade date. A good faith violation and freeriding are related cash-account problems, but their transaction facts are not identical.

Do not diagnose the account from an app banner alone. Save confirmations, deposits, sale proceeds, purchase and sale times, settlement dates, and any broker notice. Ask the firm's cash-trading team which purchase lacked settled payment and what restriction applies.

Use a funding ledger before placing the order

For each intended option purchase, list settled cash available before the order, proceeds still awaiting settlement, the settlement date of each source, deposits subject to a hold, and amounts reserved by open orders. Then record the earliest date the new position may be sold without relying on unpaid proceeds.

Options generally use T+1 premium settlement, but matching calendar dates do not by themselves cure a prohibited sequence. Broker policies may be stricter than the general rule, and option approval does not override cash-account payment requirements. When the ledger is unclear, wait for settled cash or obtain account-specific confirmation first.

Common questions

Can I buy an option immediately after selling stock in a cash account?

The broker may permit the purchase using the stock sale proceeds, but those proceeds normally remain unsettled until the stock sale's settlement date. If no other settled cash pays for the option, selling the option before that date can create a violation. Check the confirmation, settled-cash balance, open-order reservations, and firm policy rather than relying only on cash available to trade.

Can I sell an option bought with unsettled funds on the same day?

Doing so in a cash account can violate payment rules because the security was resold before the proceeds funding its purchase settled. FINRA describes this pattern as a potential good faith violation, while freeriding depends on the full facts. A profitable closing trade and matching T+1 dates do not automatically make the sequence compliant. Contact the broker before trading if another settled source cannot cover the purchase.

What is the difference between settled cash and option buying power?

Settled cash has completed the applicable payment cycle. Option buying power is a broker calculation that may include or exclude unsettled proceeds, margin capacity, collateral, open-order holds, and strategy requirements. Cash available to withdraw is another figure. Read the account definitions and confirm which balance will fully pay for the intended option without depending on a later sale.

What happens after a cash-account trading violation?

Consequences depend on the violation and firm, but they can include warnings, settled-cash-only trading, canceled buying power, or a 90-day restriction associated with freeriding. The broker should identify the triggering transactions and effective dates. Do not attempt to bypass the restriction through repeated orders or another account; reconcile the ledger and follow the firm's written remediation instructions.

What to remember

  1. A broker may display unsettled proceeds as trading power without making them settled or withdrawable cash.
  2. Selling a newly purchased option before the funding sale settles can create a good faith or other cash-account violation.
  3. Track each funding source and settlement date; option approval and T+1 do not override Regulation T or broker restrictions.
