Can you be assigned on an out-of-the-money option?
Yes, OTM option assignment is possible. Learn how holder exercise, reference prices, after-hours moves, and allocation can produce an unexpected stock position.
Direct answer
Yes. Assignment on an option that appears out of the money is possible, although it is generally uncommon. Assignment begins when a holder exercises; moneyness and exercise-by-exception influence that decision but do not guarantee it. Reference-price timing, after-hours information, stale displays, special contract terms, or an affirmative exercise instruction can produce an assignment that a short writer did not expect from the closing screen.
Assignment follows exercise, not the writer's screen
An option holder decides whether to exercise within the contract and operational rules. OCC then assigns exercise obligations to clearing members under its procedures, and the broker allocates them to eligible short accounts using its approved method. The short writer does not choose the exercising holder and cannot reject a valid assignment.
A current OTM quote usually makes voluntary exercise unattractive, so assignment risk is often low. But low is not zero. The writer's app may show a different timestamp, underlying venue, estimated mark, or delayed classification from the reference and information used by the holder.
Expiration defaults do not cover every holder choice
Exercise by exception generally processes positions meeting an applicable in-the-money threshold when no contrary instruction exists. An OTM option does not normally qualify for that default. A holder may nonetheless submit an accepted positive instruction below the threshold, making assignment possible for a corresponding short.
Before expiration, American-style equity options can be exercised on an eligible business day. A choice that looks irrational from one price snapshot may reflect another hedge, delivery need, adjusted contract, borrow constraint, or simple error. European-style and cash-settled products follow different exercise and settlement specifications.
After-hours moves create the familiar expiration surprise
For standard equity expiration, the regular close can determine the exercise-by-exception moneyness reference. Important news may then move the stock after hours while a holder can still submit an instruction before its deadline. An option classified OTM at the close can therefore be affirmatively exercised based on later information.
The after-hours price does not automatically rewrite the official reference, and not every broker accepts instructions on the same schedule. The key point for a writer is uncertainty: the holder may act on information unavailable at the last option-trading moment, while assignment confirmation can arrive later.
Plan for the deliverable until the short is closed
A short put assignment generally buys the contract deliverable at the strike; a short call assignment generally requires delivery and can create short shares if uncovered and permitted. Cash-settled or adjusted options can produce different cash or asset packages. Multiplier, quantity, fees, borrow, margin, and settlement all matter.
If the account cannot carry the result, close the short with enough time for the order to fill and confirm the executed quantity. A pending, canceled, rejected, or partially filled closing order leaves obligations on the remaining short contracts. Near expiration, maintain capacity for assignment until the broker confirms the final position.
Common questions
Why was my OTM option assigned?
The holder may have submitted a positive exercise instruction, acted on after-hours information, used a different reference, managed another position, or exercised in error. Adjusted terms or stale data can also make the contract appear more OTM than it was economically. Ask the broker for the exact series, exercise date, allocation, and deliverable.
Can an OTM covered call be assigned?
Yes, although uncommon. If assigned, matching shares are generally delivered under the contract terms. Do not assume the covered status prevents assignment; it changes how the obligation is fulfilled. Confirm tax lots, dividends, settlement, and whether all short contracts were actually covered.
Can an OTM short put be assigned?
Yes. A valid holder exercise can cause the short put writer to buy the deliverable at the strike even when a viewed reference was above it. Maintain buying power and a plan for the shares until assignment processing is complete or the short is closed.
Can I refuse an unexpected option assignment?
Generally no once a valid assignment has been allocated to the account. The writer must fulfill the contract, while any trade or instruction error must be addressed separately with the broker under applicable procedures. Contact the options desk immediately and verify the resulting stock or cash position.
